  1. So, anyone else interested in Shakespeare? I recently started rereading King Lear and I've been wondering if you children have read any of his plays. I have an anthology of all his works so feel free to chatter about any of them. I've read them all. Can't say that I /liked/ them all, but I've certainly read them. ^-^

If you've read any of his works what are your favorites? Why do you like them? What are your favorite quotes? Do you prefer the historical plays or the non-historical ones? Do you enjoy the tragedies or comedies more? Who here thinks that Romeo and Juliet are the poster children for why you don't let hormones do your thinking for you? How many of you can tell me which/how many plays have crossdressing women and other women falling in love with the crossdressing ones?

...Who else can quote Puck's epilogue word for word offhand?

If we the shadows have offended
Think but this, and all is mended
That you have but slumbered here
    While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme
No more yielding but a dream
    Gentles, do not reprehend
If you pardon, we will mend
And as I am an honest Puck
    If we have unearned luck
Now to escape the serpent's tongue
We will make amends ere long,
Else the Puck a liar call,
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands if we be friends
    And Robin shall restore amends.

...I think I messed up some of the punctuation, because I remember more commas, but I'm too lazy to get the book right now.

  2. Oh boy. Once Innokentiy sees this, she'll go crazy. Her inspiration is dear old Shakespeare. Innokentiy's a new member, and SWEET, my schoolmate who I force read to her HIVE

  3. I like Shakespeare! I like romeo and Juliet:

As is the bud bit with an envious worm
Ere he can spread his sweet leaves to the air,
Or dedicate his beauty to the sun.

    And ya I agree Amaya!

And I like A midsummer nights dream!

I found out that play from the Suite life of Zack and Cody and I like it! But I can only say that last three lines:

So good night unto you all,
Give me your hands if we be friends,
    And Robin shall restore amends

  4. 'Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?'
I think.... what does that mean in, like, modern english? Amaya, you probably know!

  5. HEY I KNOW SOME SHAKESPEARE! I SWEAR I AM WRITING THIS FROM MEMORY, NOT JUST CUT N PASTE.
    Over hill
    over dale
    thorough bush thorough briar
over park over pale thorough flood thorough fire.
    thant's all
    Bye

  6. Juliet at that point is asking why Romeo is Romeo. Her entire speech is about how he is a Montague and if he only wasn't she'd be free to love him openly. 'Wherefore art thou Romeo?' means, in my eyes at least, 'Why are you a son of my family's enemy?'

  7. I don't really like Shakespeare. I get forced to read it at school

  8. Why don't you like it? Is it because of the language? Do you dislike the characters? If you just don't like Romeo and Juliet, then I can sympathize with you and reccommend some of his better tragedies. And if you read one of his comedies, then I totally understand why you're not fond of them. Most of his tragedies are more amusing than the comedies.

  9. For me, I'm 12 so it's not required for me but one day I think I'll enjoy it.... If I actually know what shakespeare is saying half the time XD

  10. Oh, and WELCOME SHELBYFAN!!!!!!

Are you the spawn of RavenFan?

  11. Wait! Read The Merchant of Venice. It's awesome! And hello, Maqui T., perhaps you already know who I am... 8)Plus, I even have quotes:
"For love is blind, for lovers do not remember the petty follies that they themselves commit."
I think that's how it goes.

  12. Oi Maqui! And Shakespeare is awesome! Thou shalt not insult him! And yeah, he does inspire me.

  13. That's cool, Shakespeare inspires me too. ^-^

I like the tragedies best, the humor of the comedies doesn't quite appeal to me. The Merchant of Venice was okay, though. Better than Much Ado About Nothing At All.

  14. Yes i am the spawn of ravenFAN ( Who ever that it)

  15. Romeo and Juliet is ok In my opinion Its the best of all his plays The language confuses me though lol

  16. NEW MEMBER!!!! Sup I'm reensie and I have to warn you that this fourm is the most crazist fourm you'll EVER meet!

  17. Don't forget the food for Innokentiy!

  18. I'm not horribly fond of Romeo and Juliet. To me, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth were better tragedies.

  19. WOOO FRIES. AWESOME (: Im steph btw (: Macbeth is awesome. ( only one i really really like)

  20. So uh...Hi. And I recommend The Taming of The Shrew. It's good too.

  21. Don't be nervous on how you talk m'dear! Make an impression! (And yes, I mean YOU Innokentiy)

  22. Shakespeare is STUCK IN MY HEAD!!!!

Ever since we've started reading Romeo&Juliet, random lines have been popping in my head all day long, plus my own random thoughts are in Shakespearian verse. It's driving me INSANE!!!

    ...I love Shakespeare.

But I hate the way we have to learn it. I can get the meaning in my head, I don't need people barely able to pronounce half the words, let alone get the right word, struggling through it to make me possibly comprehend something so UNUSUAL that it's IMPOSSIBLE that a mer CHILD could EVER understand it without getting it SPELLED OUT to them by the obviously SUPERIOR teacher.
    GRRRAGH!!!
An example of my thought pattern in the first day of Romeo & Juliet.
Random Student #1 (as Tybalt): "What... dr-dr drawn? *pause* And talk of peace I... hate the word as I hate..."
    Me: X.X
    Teacher: "hell"
    RS#1: ......... all...
    Teacher: "Montagues"
    Me: Grrrrrr...
RS#1: ...Montagues... and ... thee. Have at thee... c-c-coward.
    Me: ...X.X...

In my mind at that moment:
Me: WHAT, DRAWN, AND UNABLE TO SPEAK! I HATE BAD READERS AS I HATE HELL, ALL BAD READERS, AND THEE!!! AVE AT THEE, RETARD!!!

Okay. I was in a bit of a rage. But seriously, I OWNED the 'Queen Mab' speech.

  23. I totally agree. Standards have gone down, honestly. I mean, how many times will I see SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS unable to pronounce 'chaos'? I mean, SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!

    ~rant over~

  24. :twisted:OMG, i hate people who read slow in my class its like everyone is SOOO SLOW, even though I'm in set 1 n all'

Takes the WHOLE lesson to read a page.

  25. I read Juliet's lines with Forrest. It was absolutley helarious. He was like, three inches shorter than I was. ^-^ And I owned that speech. Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? *laughs* And no one but the teacher understood the inflections I put in the lines. Everyone else was like: 'huh?'.

  26. Amusement stems from Twelfth Night The best of cross dressing, yush?
    ~Billie

  27. Yes, definitely the best of the cross-dressing. Have you seen the movie?

  28. I can recite pucks lines, the other monolouge??? You know,
I am that merry wonderer of the night
I jest to Oberon and make him smile
When I a fat and bean fed horse beguile
neighing in likness of filly foal
Sometimes lurk i in a gossips bowl
In very likeness of a roasted crab
and when she drinks against her lips i bob
onto her withered dewlaps pours the ale
The wisest aunt telling the saddest tale
somethimes for a three foot misteaketh me
so i slip from her bum,
    down topples she
and tailor cries and falls into a cough
and the whole quire put their hands on their hips and loffe
    and waxen in their mirth
and neeze and swear a merrier hour never was wasted there
but room fairy, here comes Oberon!

thats about it off the top of my head...
i no a monolought from As you like it (Phebe)
the one that starts "Think not i love him, though i ask for him..."
I cant be bothered reciting it all though =)

  29. My sister, Sylvia, performed Lady MacBe- (DON'T SAY THE SCOTTISH PLAY!) rant; 'off damn spot' to get into Perpich, an arts High School for Juniors & Seniors.
